Key West was the first Cuban-American city in the U.S. and it’s history has been woven with Cuban history since the late 1800’s. One of the greatest legacies of the Cuban cultural influence can be found in it’s food. You will find many Cuban restaurants in the island and among them El Siboney stands out for it’s delicious traditional Cuban dishes.
Weather you love Cuban food or are eating it for the first time, El Siboney will not disappoint. A modest building tucked amongst Old Town streets in a residential area, this restaurant is a favorite with the locals and well worth going a bit out of the way for. Favorites include Paella, Arroz con Pollo (Chicken & Rice), Cuban Mix sandwiches, the pork and the tostones.
We started our meal with some sangria and ordered the stuffed crabs and fried yucca. Our server was friendly and extremely quick. The crabs where good the yucca was delicious. Cooked to perfection, toasted and crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside the yucca was accompanied by a tangy sauce. Both my husband and I had the pork, he ordered the fried pork chunks and I had the Puerco Asado (roasted pork). Both dishes where well seasoned and perfectly cooked. While the chunks where firm and just a bit crunchy on the outside the roasted pork came shredded and it was so soft it just melted in your mouth.
Both pork dishes where accompanied by a side of rice, I had the yellow rice and my husband opted for the rice with black beans, both of them superb. The roasted pork also included Plátanos Maduros. The Platanos Maduros were perfectly cooked slices of tender, sweet, ripe plantains fried until soft and just a bit caramelized on the outside.
The portions are huge and we had to take part of the meal with us to the hotel in order to leave space for dessert and I’m glad we did. The guava cheesecake, while loosing a few points for it’s lackluster presentation was simply sublime!
So if you are looking for Cuban food while visiting Key West follow the locals to El Siboney for outstanding island comfort food and laid back, family friendly atmosphere.

Arroz con Pollo one of my favorite of all Spanish cuisine–that and Paella–This sounds like a delightful place to eat good food and relax. If I ever make it down to Key West I will certainly check them out.

My favorite dish there is the picadillo, but love the breaded grouper also. I do not know what I miss more about Key West, the fishing or the food.
